Setup 2-Step Verification

2 step verification (also known as two-factor authentication) adds an extra layer of protection to logins. Once enabled and configured, each time you sign in to your Chillidog Hosting account, you may be asked to enter both your username and password, plus as a second factor such as a security code. This is similar to what quite a number of online banks do - whereby you have to input numbers from a grid card or using a pin number generator - to prove that it is you logging into the website. It means that on the rare chance somebody knew your username and password and tried to gain access to your account, they would not be able to login without a valid key code. Chillidog Hosting is committed to providing a secure service for all customers, and gives you this option of 2-step verification, for added piece of mind.

Setup

2 step verification can be turned on or off in your client (billing) area of the website. Typically it only takes a few minutes to setup. Instead of using a grid card or a pin generator (like banks often use) Chillidog Hosting instead makes use of a free authenticator app, which you can download and install on an Android or iOS device. When an authentication key code is requested from you by the Chillidog Hosting website, you use the authenticator app to generate a key code.

Step 1

Go to the Chillidog Hosting website. Under the login menu, click on the Billing link. Login to your billing area using your normal username and password combination. On the right of the menu bar where the ‘hello’ message is, click your user name to reveal the drop-down menu.

Step 3

Search and download the free Google Authenticator app. It is available in the Google Play store (for Android) and the App Store (fir iOS). This app works on all popular handheld devices with a built in camera, like iPhones, iPod’s, iPads, and Android tablets and smart phones. Once installed on your device, launch Google Authenticator and scan the QR code shown on the screen. Or manually copy the secret key shown, if you do not have a device with a camera. The QR code shown in the picture below is the illustrative purposes only - the one shown in your billing area is the genuine code to use. Click the continue button, when scanned.

Step 4

Using the code generated by the free Google Authenticator app, type this in the box shown in your billing area. Click on the OK button. At this point, you will see a screen like the one pictured below. As suggested, it is recommended that you write down the backup code, or store it as a keychain note on your computer or using software like 1Password.

Step 5

In future when you login to Chillidog Hosting and you are asked for an authentication code, switch on your Android or iOS device. Launch the Google Authenticator app and and enter the code shown on the screen. The code changes every 30 seconds. Each generated code is only valid for 30 seconds. The number may be longer than the one shown in the image below. A special algorithm is used to generate the code, based on several secret factors.

Remember!

Chillidog Hosting will never contact you and ask for your username, password, secret code or other information like your credit card details. Attempts to syphon this information from you should be reported urgently to our customer support team. If you need to login to your account in an emergency and you are without access to the Authenticator app, you will need to use the backup code instead. 2-step login verification should be used in conjunction with a strong password, not being used for any other website or service.
